A Defining Moment: Why We Started This Company
A note from Co-Founder Karess Roseme
The voiceover of this video is an email that I sent in 2016 to my former executive team.
The email I sent marked a turning point in my career and, ultimately, my purpose. It wasn’t just about my discomfort with a product name—it was about a deeper realization of how disconnected the beauty industry can be from the communities it seeks to serve.
The product in question was the very first launched and marketed to curly-haired consumers by a brand that had, until then, only focused on straight-haired, white women in all of its marketing and promotional materials. This was a major opportunity to embrace diversity and celebrate textured hair authentically. Instead, the product was to be named "Bye Felicia," a phrase rooted in Black pop culture but often misunderstood and misappropriated.
To make matters worse, the campaign for this product featured a woman of color with curly hair, making the entire approach feel transparent and tone-deaf. It was as though the brand was attempting to check a diversity box, while failing to understand or honor the community it was suddenly “speaking” to.
Writing that email to express my concerns wasn’t easy. I knew I was challenging a decision made by individuals who didn’t share my lived experience or perspective. But as a Black woman in the beauty industry—and as someone who deeply understood the significance of this launch to the textured hair community—I couldn’t stay silent.
My co-founder Dwight experienced something equally disheartening. While working for another hair company, he sat in a boardroom and voiced concerns about a product targeted at Black individuals, only to have his insights ignored. Despite his expertise and his connection to the community, his voice wasn’t valued in the decision-making process.
These moments were pivotal for us
They exposed a glaring gap in the beauty industry: a lack of authentic representation, respect, and understanding of one of the largest and most influential spending groups in the world.
This is why we started Rose Neal Collective. We wanted to ensure that brands don’t just speak to diverse audiences—they truly listen to them, represent them, and create products and campaigns that reflect their needs and experiences. We’ve built our business to advocate for the Black community and other underrepresented groups in the beauty space.
We understand the power and responsibility of shaping the narrative, especially for communities that have driven culture and commerce but have often been overlooked. With our experiences, relationships, and unwavering commitment, we work to bridge the gap between brands and consumers, fostering connections that are authentic, meaningful, and impactful.
That email was more than a critique—it was a call to action. Today, we answer that call every day, ensuring that the beauty industry honors the diversity it serves. Our mission is simple but powerful: to advocate, represent, and create space for everyone to feel seen and celebrated.
our values
Authenticity
We lead with honesty, transparency, and a genuine commitment to creating meaningful connections—both with our clients and the communities we serve.
Integrity
We honor our word, hold ourselves accountable, and always act with the highest level of respect and ethics in everything we do.
Ingenuity
We approach every challenge with resourcefulness, innovation, and creativity. We’re problem solvers, forward thinkers, and creative strategists who transform ideas into actionable solutions. By blending imagination with strategy, we deliver results that set brands apart and move the industry forward.
People-centric
At our core, we believe that people are the foundation of everything we do. We build relationships rooted in trust, collaboration, and respect. We know that “people work for people”, not companies, and that strong leadership inspires strong teams. Instead of settling for a seat at the table, we ask, “Why build the table when you can build a house?”—creating sustainable spaces where everyone has the opportunity to grow, thrive, and succeed.
Hard work
Success doesn’t come easy. We roll up our sleeves, dig deep, and put in the effort to not just meet goals, but exceed them.
Together, We Win
We don’t want people who simply work for us—we want people who work with us. Collaboration, hard work, and partnership fuel our success, and we cross the finish line together, every time.
